| The emblem of a lion holding a book denotes the Evangelist
Mark "because he opens his gospel by describing St. John the Baptist as
'the voice of one crying in the wilderness' (Mark 1:3), because he makes
the royal dignity of Christ so apparent, and because the lion signifies
royalty in allusion to the kingly office of Christ." (Daniel J. Fleming,
Education through Stone and Glass; A Study of Decorative Symbolism
in Union Theological Seminary, 41) The emblem can be seen
on both the Broadway and Quadrangle sides of the Library's facade. |
